The university of Leeds is the predecessor of Leeds medical college, founded in 1831, and Yorkshire academy of sciences, founded in 1874. In 1887 the two schools merged with Owen college in Manchester and university college of Liverpool to form Victoria union university. In 1904 the university of Leeds received royal assent to become an independent university. After more than a century of development, Leeds university has become one of the most famous universities in Britain. The university of Leeds is also a member of the British white rose university union, the N8 university union, the commonwealth university union, the European university union, the red brick university and the Russell group of universities. The university of Leeds is located in Leeds, in the north of England. The bulk of the university was built in the second half of the 19th century to meet education requirements for local scientific and technological development. 1904 king Edward vii of England officially named the university of Leeds.
